P41 organised the 1st Process Jump Event on the 17th of February 2012. In the Henry Watteeuw Academy, which is actually one of the projects initiated by P41, several companies joined breakfast together to get into a practical and factual approach of the Process Jump.

Ignace D’Hooghe of Fischbach Belgium explained how he challenged the Process Jump by putting the stakes at 50% reduction of defects made by his expert printers. During a 1 hour presentation he showed how P41 build proto-science models of what used to be perceived as pure skill. He demonstrated the broad veil of improvement directions and which have already been implemented today, allowing him to even overshoot the highly desired gain.

Luc Loeys, Industrial Gears Watteeuw, has a wide history with P41 and the process jump. He elaborated on how the breakthroughs have lead to changeover times with 30-45% reduction and how these innovations have been incorporated in the designs of his newest machinery, allowing him to still benefit without investing any penny more on new purchases.

Other participants came from all kinds of sectors, like Libeltex, Smartphoto, Isocab and Punch Power Train. Their feedback: “Most companies talk about innovation and it remains vague. Today we saw an extreem practical approach, with concrete models, technologies and we even got the opportunity to see it at work on the floor. This was a very interesting day!”

P41 organises the 4th edition of the TRIZ Café, together with a TRIZ introduction course (RCA+) on 29/february and 1/march this year.

29th of February 2012 : TRIZ Introduction course: ROOT-CONFLICT ANALYSIS (RCA+)

By Valeri Souchkov

Hands-on Course
Length: 8 hours (9h to 17h)
Location: Bergheem
Lodewijk de Koninckstraat 10-12
2600 Berchem (Antwerp)
Participation:
155 € (incl. drinks & lunch, VAT)
-20% discount when combined with the TRIZ network meeting
Number of participants: max 20

WHAT YOU GET

Understanding RCA+ method.

Acquiring practical skills with problem analysis and building RCA+ diagrams.

Learning ways to resolving contradictions to produce most effective and efficient solutions.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Everyone who would like to get introduced to TRIZ and learn the RCA+ paradigm of problems formulation, structuring and visualization and acquire practical skills how to use it in real everyday life. You do not need to have prior knowledge of TRIZ to participate in the course. This course is also a great warm-up

CERTIFICATE

Upon successful completion of the course, each student receives a uniquely numbered certificate issued by ICG T&C and the International TRIZ Training Centre.

WHAT IS RCA+?

Root Conflict Analysis (RCA+) is a technique for defining, structuring, and visually representing problems and problem situations. RCA+ helps managing complexity of defining problems through discovering contradictions which prevent us from solving a problem directly and recognizing how these contradictions are related to each other.

RCA+ is a domain-independent universal technique which can be performed within the scope of three tasks, to model a specific problem related to a certain specific product, service or a process (e.g. glass polishing takes too long time, sales of a specific service produced by a specific company are too low).

To model a broad problem related to a whole class of products, processes or services (e.g. to reduce traffic jams, eliminate errors by a call centre, etc.)

To predict and eliminate possible and potential failures within systems and processes (e.g. to identify possible problems which might be caused by a newly developed camera, or predict causes of project failure).

In summary, RCA+ helps with:

Decomposing a problem to a number of related causes and effects.

Identifying “invisible” causes and conflicts.

Extracting and presenting contradictions.

Structuring and visualizing a problem.

Reaching a common agreement and vision of a problem situation.

Improving collaboration among team members when defining and solving a problem.

Providing direct input for contradiction resolution techniques. (cfr. TRIZ)

RCA+ can be used in every area where problems, contradictions, and undesired effects take place and can be used independently of TRIZ to analyze problems and situations. In addition, coupled with TRIZ techniques for resolving conflicts, RCA+ provides a powerful platform not only for problem analysis but also for creative problem solving.

On friday 2nd of September, the P41 visited the Research centre of Jülich.

Aside from the supercomputer JUGENE, which consists of 300.000 processors, special attention went to the Fusion Energy Research Project. There is a Tokamak on site. Tokamak is the Rusian acronym for “toroidal chamber with magnetic coils” and it is a device using a magnetic field to confine a plasma in the shape of a torus (doughnut). Achieving a stable plasma equilibrium requires magnetic field lines that move around the torus in a helical shape. Such a helical field can be generated by adding a toroidal field (traveling around the torus in circles) and a poloidal field (traveling in circles orthogonal to the toroidal field). In a tokamak, the toroidal field is produced by electromagnets that surround the torus, and the poloidal field is the result of a toroidal electric current that flows inside the plasma. This current is induced inside the plasma with a second set of electromagnets.

The tokamak is one of several types of magnetic confinement devices, and is one of the most-researched candidates for producing controlled thermonuclear fusion power. Magnetic fields are used for confinement since no solid material could withstand the extremely high temperature of the plasma. In Jülich they perform tests at 200 million degrees Celsius!

P41 will now see how they can assist in overcoming the current remaining challenges to make this technology viable.
